Xeric love

Xeric winds
Brushed her face.
The sun burned
Her skin,
Clothes, damp
With sweat,
Clinged to the skin,
And the envelope
In her hands
Weighed a thousand tonnes.
A one liner
On Hallmark card.
Now,
That was hardly
A way to break-up!
Courtesy,
Perhaps,
Sounded good
Only in dictionaries.
Round the corner
Another hot gust
Caught her.
Summers!
When it
Should be spring!
But then
That’s life.
Ain’t it?
By the time
She reached
Her niche
The xeric feeling
Had spread on
To her whole being.
In the
Incessant hum
Of cooler,
She concluded
Love too
Was xeric.
Promising life,
But,
Leaving behind
Only
Dry, parched souls.

  3. I enjoyed your poem. Xeric was the perfect word for the way unrequited love feels. You did a great job building up the tension - it didn't feel like you had to force the sense to fit the sentiment or the word.

  4. Quite a melancholy feel to your poem, I enjoyed the imagery. I admit I did have to look up "xeric", though! In Scotland, we usually have winter in spring, not summer. :)

    1. Thank you so much Nick. Where I live, we too have winters in spring but where I am working, we are having full blast of summers.

  5. A fabulous way to use the term and meaning of xeric. This fresh application adds depth and meaning to the poem. Nice work.
